Las Arenas Reserve
Obalo
A harmonious wine
Ripe and very harmonious wine of 100% Tempranillo grapes from 65-90 year old vines with very low yields. Very rich in nuances: cherry, blackcurrant, violet, dry dark chocolate, vanilla and tobacco in a firm corset of ripe tannin and acidity with a hint of orange peel. For game, roast beef, stews and mature cheeses.
After manual harvesting and sorting the grapes twice, a cool maceration and fermentation in French oak, each plot separately, follows. Malolactic / apple-lactic fermentation takes place in 100% new French barriques before the wine is aged for 18 months, before blending the final wine and bottle aging for at least two years.

Obalo
Obalo seeks to express the true and unique fruitiness of Rioja's Tempranillo grape while highlighting the fullness and structure of the modern Rioja style. The winery belongs to the new style in Rioja, "las modernistas". The winery was newly built in 2006 and is located high on the mountainside, on the border between Rioja Alta and Alavesa, near the village of Obalos, with the Sierra Cantabria mountain range, which protects against the cold from the north, in the back. At the same time, the Sonsierra mountains bring in Atlantic air from the west, which mitigates extremes in the climate. The location of the vines at an altitude of 400-700 ms ensures the vital difference between day and night temperatures, which gives elegance and acidity, even in powerful wines. Here, the Tempranillo grape and French oak are favored instead of American.
The soil in all fields is a mixture of limestone, marl, sandstone and clay, which drains well. The vines are between 40 and 90 years old, and the highest fields are terraced. The microclimate and sun exposure of the individual plots are taken into account by always hand-harvesting, double-sorting the fruit and vinifying each plot separately. The bodega has approx. 900 French barrels with different toasting and ages from new to 3 years, so there are ample opportunities for a balanced aging of the individual wine.
