Beneath the Clouds, Chardonnay
Oak Valley
Fresh and stylish
There's really good fruit concentration here with just a hint of overseas exoticism: fresh orange tones and dry peach, tightly controlled by stony minerality and persistent cool-climate acidity. This wine uses only natural yeast, long, cool fermentation and aging in used French oak barrels.

Oak Valley
Statistically, Elgin is the coolest wine region in South Africa. The area receives large amounts of annual rainfall, which results in slow growth at the beginning of the year. In the summer, when other wine regions suffer from the heat of the sun, Elgin is characterized by a welcome wind from the southeast, "The Cape Doctor", which draws a cloud cover over the hillsides. This keeps the daytime temperature down, extends the ripening and preserves the acid balance in the wine. It is not until midday that the sun dissolves the cloud cover. This provides perfect conditions for making wines that are very cool and elegant in style. Oak Valley wines are known for their elegance. The focus on detail in the fields and minimal intervention in the cellar help create these wines that ooze cool-climate in style.
Sir Antonie Viljoen founded Oak Valley Estate in 1898. He started with apple orchards and in 1908 he started the first wine production in the Elgin Valley. The winery was closed in the 1940s, when the state-run mega-group KWV controlled everything, but production resumed in the late 1900s, when a brand new winery was built and new vines were planted. The first - new - Oak Valley wine was the house Sauvignon Blanc 2003. Antonie can take a large part of the credit for Elgin being recognized as an extremely suitable agricultural land. The area is known for its large apple and pear orchards, flower production and, not least, the production of high-quality cool-climate wine.
